PMI letter template

A clean PMI cancellation request is easier for a servicer to process

Use this template as a starting point, then confirm your servicer's current instructions before sending anything by portal, upload, fax, or mail.

Before sending

Run the math before you write the letter

The letter should not be the first step. Start by checking your loan-to-value ratio, loan type, monthly PMI, and whether your recent payment history is clean enough for a request.

A stronger request states exactly what you are asking for and includes enough file context for the servicer to route it correctly.

  • Current loan balance
  • Estimated property value or valuation support
  • Loan number and property address
  • Names and signatures of all borrowers
  • A direct request to cancel private mortgage insurance

I am requesting cancellation of private mortgage insurance (PMI) on the loan listed above.

Based on my current loan balance and property value, I believe the loan may meet the requirements for PMI cancellation. Please review my account and let me know what valuation, payment-history, or investor-specific requirements are needed to complete the cancellation review.

Please confirm receipt of this request and provide the next steps in writing.

Submission

Send it through the channel your servicer recognizes

Some servicers accept secure-message uploads. Others require a signed written request or provide a specific PMI cancellation form. If the servicer publishes an address or upload path, use that current instruction rather than guessing.

Keep a copy of the request, proof of delivery, and any valuation invoice or appraisal confirmation. The follow-up trail matters if the request stalls.

FAQ

Should I include my home value estimate in the letter?

You can mention the basis for your request, but avoid overstating it as final proof. The servicer may require its own valuation, broker price opinion, or appraisal.

Can I email the PMI cancellation request?

Only if your servicer accepts that channel. Use the servicer portal or written instructions shown in your account whenever possible.

Should every borrower sign?

Many servicers expect all borrowers to sign a written request. If there is a co-borrower, include them unless your servicer's instructions say otherwise.

Check your own PMI numbers before you call the servicer.

The fastest way to make the next step concrete is to run the calculator and see whether your LTV, loan type, and PMI amount point toward a cancellation review.
